Silver Fillings vs Composite Resin Filings
Sometimes patients ask why we never use silver-mercury fillings at Smile Quest Dental in our Rocklin dental office. One reason is cosmetic. Composite resin fillings can be color matched to surrounding teeth. We have also found that old silver-mercury amalgam fillings tend to darken teeth and act like a wedge in the tooth which can lead to tooth fractures. There is also concern about mercury contamination, a possible side effect of silver-mercury fillings.
Dr Smurthwaite recommends that when old silver-mercury amalgam fillings need to be replaced, the tooth be restored with composite resin fillings or porcelain CEREC lifetime* restorations..
