Dental Procedures - Tooth Decay and Filling Cavities

Tooth Decay and Cavities

Tooth decay, and the hole or "cavity" that it leaves behind in your mouth, is one of the most common problems among dental patients today. In fact, it is reported that among children it is five times more common than asthma or hay fever. Tooth decay can begin as soon as a child gets his or her first tooth and can continue through adulthood if not treated and prevented. Everyone that has teeth is at risk for decay and the cavities it creates.

Treating Decay and Cavities

A tooth that has decay must be treated early. Leaving a decaying tooth untreated allows the decay to spread, destroying the tooth and eventually making it weak. A weak tooth is susceptible to fractures and cracks and can eventually be lost.

When decay is found on a tooth, the dentist removes it, leaving a clean cavity. Dental fillings are used to fill the cavity to protect the tooth from further decay.

Types of Fillings

There are several types of fillings. The most common fillings used today are amalgam and composite fillings.

Amalgam (Silver) Fillings

Amalgam filings are made out of a combination of mercury and other metals that are strong and durable, but can leave an unsightly area on the tooth where the cavity is filled.

Composite (Acrylic Resin) Fillings

A second type of filling used by many cosmetic dentists is a white composite filling. Composite fillings are a mixture of acrylic resin and super fine ground glasslike particles that match the color of the filling to the color of your tooth. Composite fillings are more attractive then silver fillings and are resistant to ware but are not as durable as silver filings in high impact areas of the mouth. Sometimes the cavity in a tooth is too large to use composite fillings. In this case, porcelain (ceramic) materials are used.

Filling A Cavity With Porcelain

When a cavity has taken a large part of the tooth, it is sometimes necessary to place a formed piece of porcelain into or on the tooth to provide structure and strength. The ceramic inlay or onlay is bonded to the inside of the cavity wall to give the tooth strength and restore its natural translucent look, something that neither amalgam or resin based fillings cannot do.

Preventing Cavities and Fillings

One of the easiest ways of preventing cavities and filings is to brush your teeth after you eat. People who eat diets high in sugars and carbohydrates and especially susceptible to cavities. Choose a toothpaste with fluoride. Fluoride helps fight decay and can really make a significant difference with children

You should also schedule regular teeth cleanings, about once a year, to have your teeth cleaned and to identify the beginnings of decay. Early prevention and treatment is the best defense against decay.
