Rocklin Cosmetic Dentist - Dental Implant Technology
When a tooth has been lost or must be pulled due to decay, dental implants can be used to permanently replace the missing tooth. Dental implants can restore your smile and the functionality of a missing tooth, something that has only been possible with the development of modern dental technology.
Types of Dental Implants
There are technical terms for dental implants but basically your implanted tooth will rest on top of the jaw bone or be placed inside the jaw bone. The most common placement is inside the jaw bone.
Endosteal or in bone implants, a screw or post usually made of titanium is placed inside the jaw bone. When the bone has had sufficient time to grow around the post, a new replacement tooth (crown) is attached to the post. The crown is color matched to the surrounding teeth to help maintain the perfect smile. Some patients cannot receive a post due to the structure of their jaw. In this case, a on bone implant is used.
Subperiosteal or on bone implants are placed on the top of the jaw, resting on a metal platform to hold the post. As with endosteal implants, your new tooth (crown) is placed on the post that is resting on the metal platform.
