Rocklin Sedation Dentist - Dental Nitrous Oxide
What Is Dental Nitrous Oxide?
We use nitrous oxide ( laughing gas) in our Rocklin dentist office for patients who wish to be relaxed during their dental procedures but do not want to use conscious sedation through the use of a pill. Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that was discovered in 1793 by Joseph Priestly, a english priest and scientist. The gas has the effect of minimizing or eliminating pain during dental procedures.
Am I A Candidate For Nitrous Oxide?
When you visit our Rocklin dentist office, let us know when you arrive if you prefer to use nitrous oxide. Most of our patients qualify to use nitrous oxide, however, if you are experiencing nasal congestion or experience claustrophobia, you many choose to use one of our other conscious sedation methods.
What Happens During My Visit
After you are seated in one of our exam rooms, one of our dental team members will place a small mask over your nose which will comfortable rest there during the remainder of your visit. As the nitrous oxide begins to work you will probably begin to feel aloof and extremely relaxed. After a few minutes you will be asked how you are doing and be given the opportunity to increase or decrease the amount of nitrous oxide that is delivered. Once you have reached a level of sedation comfortable to you, the dentist will deliver any necessary anesthetic and your treatment will begin.
Following your treatment the nitrous oxide will be turned off and oxygen will be delivered to you for around 5 minutes, allowing you to clear your head and regain normal consciousness.
What Are The Side Effects Of Nitrous Oxide?
There are few documented side effects of nitrous oxide. Some patients have reported a claustrophobic feeling during treatment. Other patients do not experience the relaxing effects of nitrous oxide at all. But the majority of patients respond well to this form of relaxation and do not have any long term consequences.
