Rocklin Cosmetic Dentist - NTI Tension Suppression
NTI - Good Morning America
When you wake up in the morning, how do you feel? Unfortunately, for millions of people, achy neck muscles, a head ache and sore jaw is what they greet the new day with.
A new device, shown here on Good Morning America, is changing the way people think about morning pain. It is called an NTI tension suppression system or NTI for short. And you won't find it at your medical doctor. You will need to visit your dentist.
What Is An NTI Suppression Device?
In short, an NTI is a pressure relief device for your mouth. Every night when you go to sleep, your mouth, jaw and associated muscles follow some type of routine. For some, this routine is relatively calm and uneventful. But for others, the night means clenched teeth, grinding and a constant state of tension. If you are in the second group of people, an NTI might be just what Dr Smurthwaite would recommend!
How Does NTI Suppression Work?
Have you ever cut a piece of rope with a pair of scissors? Think about where you would place the rope to get the most pressure when cutting. Naturally it would be close to the joint in the scissors where the most leverage is applied. The further the rope is placed away from the joint of the scissors, the less leverage is applied and it becomes increasingly more difficult to cut the rope because there is less pressure.
Your jaw works the same way. When you close your mouth and clench, you are putting pressure on your teeth and jaw. Because your molars (back teeth) are the first to hit and are closest to the joint of your jaw, they get an incredible amount of pressure. This pressure and the associated tension can be so great during the night that it can create migraine headaches, muscle tension and sensitive teeth. If the clenching could be moved further away from the joint of the mouth, pressure could be reduced, similar to the way pressure is reduced on the rope in our scissor example.
NTI devices move the pressure of clenching further away from the joint of the jaw by causing the teeth in the front of your mouth to touch before the teeth in the back. This has the same effect as moving the rope to the front of the scissors. Because the pressure is being applied so much further away from the joint, the jaw cannot develop sufficient pressure to cause problems.
