Rocklin Cosmetic Dentist - Porcelain Onlay
Unlike a porcelain inlay, which fills a cavity created by the removal of decay on a tooth, porcelain onlays cover all or most of the tooth surface in an effort to preserve and strengthen the remaining tooth. In essence, a porcelain onlay is literally set on top of a tooth creating a new surface. This process strengthens the tooth and makes it less likely to fracture when chewing.
Why Porcelain Onlay
There are several advantages to CEREC porcelain onlays. The first and most noticeable being the ability to color match the porcelain to surrounding teeth. Cosmetic dentists often recommend porcelain onlays over gold crowns for this very reason. Another reason cosmetic dentists use porcelain onlays is to preserve as much of the existing healthy tooth as possible. Unlike gold crowns which require removing a great deal of the natural tooth, dental onlays can minimize reduction of the healthy tooth structure. Finally, onlays do not usually go below the gum line as crowns do. Staying above the gum line reduces the risk of irritation and infection.
