Rocklin Cosmetic Dentist - Porcelain Veneers

Cosmetic dentists use porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates in a variety of procedures to improve the aesthetic appeal of teeth that have been discolored, chipped or have slight misalignments. . The dental porcelain wafers are bonded to the tooth and color matched to produce the perfect smile.

Why use Porcelain?

Teeth have a natural translucent look to them meaning that when light shines on them the light penetrates and gives depth and dimension to the tooth. In years gone by, the materials used to make dental veneers did not have this translucent attribute, making the tooth appear slightly different than the natural teeth surrounding it. Porcelain is translucent and does reflect light, creating a more authentic replacement tooth.

Another good reason for using porcelain in dental veneers has to do with the physical makeup of porcelain. Materials previously used by cosmetic dentists had porous characteristics which contributed to staining when coffee, tea and tobacco made contact with them. Porcelain, on the other hand, is a glass and is virtually non porous, making it a great choice for cosmetic dental veneers.

Veneers vs. Braces

LUMINEERS and porcelain dental veneers can be used to resurface the tooth and straighten the appearance of your teeth. LUMINEERS and porcelain veneers are essentially instant and permanent straightening, instant and permanent whitening, instant and permanent perfect teeth in just a few weeks!

LUMINEERS or porcelain veneers are usually recommended in cases where teeth are mildly crooked and misaligned, misshapen or severely darkened or stained. The dentist can evaluate your individual situation and determine the best course of action.

LUMINEERS vs. Porcelain Veneers

The difference between LUMINEERS and porcelain veneers esthetically are no too different. They are both made from porcelain and they are both permanently bonded to your tooth. They both create a long-lasting life-changing smile.

LUMINEERS are a contact-thin piece of porcelain that is bonded to your existing enamel or existing crown or bridge. We remove little-to-no tooth structure to prepare for the LUMINEER veneer. We simply take an impression, send it to the lab and receive your LUMINEER veneers in about 3 weeks. Dr Smurthwaite will then bond them on to your teeth and you leave with an white, straight, perfect smile.

The advantage to LUMINEERS is that there is little-to-no tooth structure removed, so you get to enjoy a veneer dental appointment with:

  • No Numbing
  • No Temporary Crowns

With porcelain veneers, you are first comfortably numbed. Then, Dr Smurthwaite removes some tooth structure to make room for the new porcelain. Finally you leave with instant fabulous looking temporary resin veneers that same day while you wait for your new porcelain veneers to arrive from the lab!

Maintaining Porcelain Dental Veneers

Although LUMINEERS and dental veneers are made from porcelain and resist stains, proper care is essential to maintaining them. Veneers are attached to the tooth using a thin layer of cement as a bonding agent. This bonding agent is porous and if not properly cleaned can begin to discolor over prolonged exposure to coffee, tea, tobacco and other foods and beverages. Proper oral hygiene and routine cleanings by our wonderful hygienist will help you maintain your vibrant smile for decades to come!
